action

The beautiful innkeeper daughter Giuletta marries the Marchese de Montebello. At his castle she meets again as Luigi Paoli, with whom she once had a fleeting affair and who is now at the Marchese's service as his secretary. Paoli intimidates Giuletta and plans to drive the Marchese to his death in order to get his property. Meanwhile, Enrico, the Marchese's young nephew, falls in love with his new aunt and makes her a stormy declaration of love. Luigi ensures that his boss, the Marchese, sees everything and also admits that he once had a relationship with Giuletta.

But then the Marchese suffers a heart attack and dies. In his will he decreed that Giuletta may never marry again and that she would have to live in the barren dying room for the rest of her life, staring at his painted face from every wall. The brutal Paoli, who is appointed executor and exerts a demonic influence on Giuletta, forces her to accept the inhumane conditions. Giuletta slowly goes mad and strangles Paoli in this state of martyrdom.
