Hofmann made his debut in 1911 and appeared at the Kleiner Theater, the Kammerspiele and the Kleiner Schauspielhaus. He celebrated his first major success as Moritz Stiefel in the play Spring Awakening .

But then Hofmann mainly became a film actor. In 1913 Max Reinhardt helped him get his first film role. During the First World War , he served as a reserve officer in the field artillery for two years . Then he was back in front of the camera and enjoyed considerable popularity as a woman's favorite for several years. Henny Porten , Asta Nielsen and Pola Negri were among his partners.

His fame rapidly faded towards the end of the 1920s, and Hofmann was rarely seen on stage, for example at the theater in Behrenstrasse .
