The Antiquarian from Strasbourg is a German silent film drama with propagandistic undertones filmed on location in Alsace during the World War 1917 . Bruno Eichgrün , Edith Meller and Ludwig Hartau play the leading roles in the title role.
action
The film is about the emotional conflict in Alsatian families, whether one feels part of Germany or France. One day during the war, the German history professor Hubert Schwab was billeted in the house of the Strasbourg antiquarian Schneider. There he met the Alsatian family Häsli. The widowed Ms. Häsli, her son Viktor and her daughter Claire are generally extremely bad at talking to the jagged Prussian-Germans, and so a historical dispute soon ensues between them and the guest. But the well-read and learned historian Schwab is able to convince the Alsatians of the correctness of this empire country to belong to Germany. As a result of her newly gained knowledge, Claire becomes engaged to the professorial houseguest in passing.
Production notes
The antiquarian from Strasbourg was created in December 1917 in Strasbourg and Sessenheim (exterior shots) as well as in the Luna-Film-Atelier in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse 224 and passed the film censorship in January 1918. It premiered on March 5, 1918 in the Berlin Tauentzienpalast . In Vienna you could see the strip exactly one month later. The five-act film was around 1,600 meters long in the German version and around 1,480 meters in the Austrian version. Several hundred volunteer extras made themselves available for the recordings in Alsace.
The antiquarian from Strasbourg is a rare example of German propaganda film in the late phase of the First World War , with which the Germanness in Alsace-Lorraine wanted to underpin and the claim to ownership of this part of the country for the German Reich.
Rochus Gliese created the film structures .
