Marie Antoinette , sometimes with the subtitle as Marie Antoinette, the life of a queen , is a German historical silent film from 1922 by Rudolf Meinert with Diana Karenne in the title role.

action

The period of the plot spans the years 1770 to 1793, the venues are Vienna, Paris, Versailles and Varennes.

Princess Marie Antoinette is to be married to the French royal court according to the will of her mother, the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa. The Dauphin woos her favor, and soon the shy girl arrives at Versailles. But the royal court quickly turns out to be morally degraded and does not listen to the concerns of the common people. In the initially joyless marriage, a royal son is finally fathered. The royal couple (in this film) are good parents, but weak rulers. Eventually the common people begin to rebel, as hunger and ongoing injustices are driving masses to the barricades.

The royal couple is captured by revolutionary guards, arrested and tortured with numerous humiliations and abuse. There is looting and excesses of violence, the king's son is forcibly given schnapps by a drunken cobbler. The revolutionaries lose all measure, Marie Antoinette's husband, King Louis XVI, is led onto the scaffold and beheaded without proof of his guilt. Marie Antoinette, who has recently become very pious, gives herself up to prayers and forgives her executioners who have become murderers in advance. Then she too dies from the guillotine.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: “A version of the historical events which Marie Antoinettes and her husband excuses for the political turmoil with the obstacles that arise from family life, characterizing them more or less as victims of the unfortunate circumstances. So much for the very exciting subject, built using all the dramatic possibilities. The portrayal is excellent in all roles, Diana Karenne at the top. The presentation deserves unqualified praise, the photography is good. A first-class picture in every respect. "
