The Dog of Baskerville is the first film adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Dog of Baskerville .
history
In 1907 Richard Oswald wrote a screenplay based on his play Der Hund von Baskerville - Detective Comedy in 4 Acts (1906), written with Julius Philipp , which in turn is based on the novel of the same name by Conan Doyle. Oswald's adaptations join other arrangements of the Sherlock Holmes - and Hund von Baskerville - material that were made in Germany during this period, such as the play Der Hund von Baskerville: Drama in Four Acts from the Scottish Highlands. Based on motifs from Poes and Dolles 'novellas by Ferdinand Bonn or Albert Bozenhard ' s Sherlock Holmes: Detective comedy in 4 acts based on Conan Doyle and [William] Gillette (1906) .
In 1914, Oswald worked as a script supervisor for Union Vitascope Studios in Berlin-Weißensee .
Detective novel adaptations were very successful in German cinemas at that time, so that Oswald was able to write a script based on The Dog of Baskerville .
In 1929 Richard Oswald directed another stand-alone adaptation of The Hound of Baskerville , the last Sherlock Holmes silent film starring Carlyle Blackwell as Sherlock Holmes.
production
Richard Oswald wrote the script and Rudolf Meinert was commissioned to direct. Alwin Neuss was cast as Sherlock Holmes. Neuss had previously played the role of the detective in the 1910 film The Million Testament . The Baskerville Hound was so successful that six sequels were produced.
