action

Somewhere in a Jewish ghetto in Europe of yesteryear.

The old Leiser Menscher has died, now his son Todres is to take his place and, with the rabbi's permission, do the shopping in the city for the ghetto. The illiterate is quickly fascinated by the waiting temptations; For example, Todres saw a theater performance for the first time in his life. He decides to leave the ghetto forever to become an actor. Todres not only leaves his mother behind: He also sheds his Jewish identity, removes his beikeles , shortens his caftan , learns to read and write from the monk Paulus and calls himself Theodor Tews as an artist from then on.

In just five years he has become a famous man. In the meantime, Tews has become a court actor, denies his Jewish identity and yet married Dora, the daughter of a Jewish banker. Finally he was even raised to the nobility by the prince. In the meantime, his old ghetto has excluded him from his ranks because he has broken with too many things that make up Jewish life. His mother is then treated like a leper. She therefore decides to go to her “lost” son after a long time.

Todres' mother is received by Dora who, to her great surprise, learns that her husband, like her, is of Jewish faith. While Todres / Theodor categorically ruled out a return to the ghetto, Dora and their son moved back there. When Todres realizes that Dora has actually decided to take this step, he also renounces fame and title and now wants to take the way back, but the guard turns him away at the entrance to the ghetto. Todres decides to become a monk and joins the order of his old mentor, Prior Paulus. In the monastery he writes his memoirs: "chains of faith".

Production notes

Chains of faith was created from the end of 1915 for Meinert's production company Meinert-Film Bürstein u. Janak, Berlin. The film had six acts and was around 1900 meters long when it was shown in Vienna, which corresponds to a playing time of a good one and a half hours. A youth ban was issued. The first performance took place on March 31, 1916 in the Union theaters in Berlin.

The actor named “Little Lisson” in the program booklet is Heinrich Lisson's son , who was not even three years old at the time , and who later became Theo Nischwitz's career in German film as a special effects artist. The other actors with the exception of Aldor were also not named by their first names.

criticism

In Paimann's film lists you can read: "The material is very good, photos, scenery and play are great, a hit for an intelligent, but especially for a Jewish audience".
