At the court of Leopold V, Duke of Austria, the young Walther von der Vogelweide met the budding Jewish doctor / Magistra Judith / Jutta von Cologne and fell in love with her. Both are in the political scheming for the successor of the unexpectedly deceased German Emperor Heinrich VI. involved, with Walther initially working on the side of the Staufer and Judith at the side of their uncle, Stefan von Köln, who, as a merchant, favors a nephew of the English king Richard the Lionheart and thus a Guelph for the sake of promised commercial advantages. Otto renounces Beatrix and abuses the doctor he hated. The following day there is a reconciliation between Judith and Walther. They begin to forge a plot to get rid of Otto and instead have Friedrich elected king. When Friedrich moved into Constance in September 1212, just a few hours before Otto, Walther and Judith finally found each other in the city.
