The greatest present (Spanish: El Mayor Regalo ) is a film by Juan Manuel Cotelo , which premiered in Spanish cinemas on November 9, 2018 and has been broadcast in Germany since October 18, 2019. It deals with true stories or testimonies about reconciliation that individual people, families and communities have experienced, whereby the Christian faith was emphasized as reconciliation.
action
In Cotelo's film, fiction is only the framework plot, which takes place in the village of "Hateful Town" in the Wild West and is designed as a comedy . Two gunslingers are just about to decide a family feud that goes back generations in a shooting duel when the director - played by Cotelo himself - interrupts the scene, tears up the script under protests from the actors and demands a "real happy ending". To do this, however, a corresponding story with a true perspective of reconciliation must first be found and the crew must be convinced of it. The actors fail during the absence of their director between the individual stories of reconciliation to build lasting peace. The possibility of the death penalty , vigilante justice and a dictatorial “equality paradise” are played out. The cowboys of Hateful Town learn in the course of the film that peace needs steps of loving reconciliation, so that breaking out of the vicious circle of guilt and revenge is possible.
The first example story is about the Frenchman Tim Guenard, who was severely abused by his parents, so that only the desire for revenge let him survive. He became a boxing champion, but then struggled inwardly for forgiveness, as he also told in his autobiography Boxer Child - Love is Stronger than Hate . The Spaniard Irene Villa survived a terrorist attack at the age of twelve, so she is dependent on prosthetic legs. Shane O'Doherty fought for the Irish Republican Army as a teenager and began the long road to reconciliation in prison. Then several ordinary people from Colombia are introduced who began to live forgiveness in the midst of violent and drug-related crime. A Mexican couple found a new, deeper love after several years of conflict and separation. Finally, conflict management strategies after the genocide in Rwanda (1994) are presented.
The personal testimonies of the power of forgiveness in complex situations often also deal with forgiveness experienced by God as an aid on the way to steps towards reconciliation with others.
Production and distribution
The low-budget film was financed primarily through crowdfunding , as evidenced by 3,500 names in the credits. The film premieres on November 9, 2018 in Spain, January 24, 2019 in Austria and October 18, 2019 in Germany and Luxembourg.
