action

On New Year's Eve, a young girl is sent out into the snow and cold by her stepmother to sell matches in town. It is unsuccessful because all people want to get warm and to their celebrations quickly. She is also stopped by a police officer in front of a restaurant.

Since she doesn't dare to go home without making a living, she finally falls asleep in the snow and dreams of a toy shop where the toy figures come to life: a lieutenant commands wooden soldiers and flees into the clouds with the girl from a hussar on a horse. The hussar, also on horseback, follows them. A fight ensues between the lieutenant and the hussar. The hussar wins and pushes the lieutenant from the clouds. He then grabs the girl and carries her up a hill where there is a cross. The cross turns into a small tree, the flowers of which fall down, the hussar disappears. The flowers fall on the "sleeping" girl.

On New Year's morning, passers-by discovered the girl's snow-covered body. She froze to death.
