The Dassault Mirage F2 was a project to develop a medium attack aircraft for the French aircraft manufacturer Dassault Aviation .
history
The Mirage F2 was developed by Dassault due to a need for an attack aircraft based on the Mirage III . In contrast to the Mirage III, no delta wing was used, but a swept wing in shoulder wing construction with sawtooth . The aircraft was powered by a single Pratt & Whitney TF30 turbofan engine. Three prototypes were ordered in 1965. Even after the first flight, the machine was perceived as a variant of the Mirage III. The designation was accordingly Mirage 3F-2 or Mirage III F . The machine completed its maiden flight on June 12, 1966. Afterwards, the testing of the engine of the same design, the SNECMA TF-306 , produced in France, began. At the time of the first flight, observers assumed that the aircraft would be mass-produced for the French Air Force.
In May 1966 the generals wanted to convert the F2 into a fighter plane. The new program was called Mirage F3, but no aircraft had been completed by the end of both types in November 1967.
The prototype remained the only aircraft built; The fuselage and engine formed the basis of the Mirage G with variable wing geometry.
