Dasylirion longistylum is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). An English common name is "San Luis Potosi Sotol".

description

Dasylirion longistylum is stemless or forms a short stem up to 30 cm in height. The variable, irregularly arranged waxy bluish leaves are 50 to 70 cm long and up to 10 mm wide. The radial spines are directed irregularly upwards.

The thin, paniculate, short inflorescence is up to 1 m high. The numerous flowers are yellow.

The egg-shaped capsule fruits contain a seed and are 6 to 8 mm long and 5 to 6 mm wide. The triangular brown seeds are 3 mm long and 2 mm wide.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion longistylum is distributed in Mexico in San Luis Potosi at altitudes of 1500 m. The species grows on stony slopes and open woodland.

The first description was in 1918 by James Francis Macbride .

The rare Dasylirion longistylum is a member of the Glaucophyllum section . It grows in a limited area in south east San Luis Potosi. The thin leaves and the narrow inflorescence are typical. Dasylirion longistylum can withstand short periods of frost down to minus 8 ° C when it is dry.

Dasylirion longistylum is hardly known.
