The rule and later county of Maillé was a medieval French fiefdom, whose name refers to the place Maillé west of Tours , which was renamed Luynes in the 17th century .

history

Maillé Castle (today: Luynes Castle ) in the Loire Valley, owned by the House of Albert , Dukes of Luynes , since 1619

The Maillé fiefdom was owned by the Maillé family from the 10th to the beginning of the 16th century . With the death of Baron François de Maillé, who died in 1501 without sons, the Maillé rule passed to his descendants in a female line from the Laval line of the House of Montmorency . On June 17, 1578, Jean de Laval, Baron de Maillé was raised to Count of Maillé. Already with his son Gui de Laval the line died out in 1590, the title was then used for some time by the third husband of the widow Guis, Armand le Dangereux, before the heirless Barony Maillé was sold to the Le Bellay family in 1611 and on August 3, 1619 was eventually acquired by Charles d'Albert . The county of Maillé then became part of the newly established duchy of Luynes , the village of Maillé was renamed Luynes.

Around the same time, at the beginning of the 17th century, Charles de Maillé, a member of a younger line, was appointed Marquis de Kerman (or Carman) and titular Count of Maillé. Both titles probably fell back to the crown towards the end of the Ancien Régime , between 1786 and 1789.

Again almost parallel to this, Charles de Maillé de la Tour-Landry, Baron d'Entrames (1732-1791), a member of the older line that had lost the Maillé rule at the beginning of the 16th century, became Duke of Maillé on April 1, 1784 raised, also without this title being based on an appropriate duchy. The title is still held today by one of his descendants as the 7th Duc de Maillé. At the same time, the Duke's eldest son was named Marquis de Maillé. The younger descendants of the first duke, in turn, carry the title of Comte de Maillé.

At around the same time, a close relative of the first duke, Charles François de Maillé de la Tour-Landry, added that of Marquis de Maillé to his title of Marquis de Jalesnes, but for the sake of simplicity he was called Marquis de la Tour-Landry. The title was changed over time to Marquis de Maillé de La Tour-Landry. This line expired in 1952.
