Dasylirion texanum is a species of the genus Dasylirion in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The specific epithet texanum means '(Latin texanus) Texan'. An English common name is "Texas Sotol".

description

Dasylirion texanum forms a short trunk up to 50 cm in height. The variable, sometimes twisted, green, serrated leaves are 70 to 130 cm long and 8 to 14 mm wide. The irregularly arranged radial spines are directed upwards.

The panicley, narrow inflorescence becomes 2 to 4 m high. The numerous flowers are cream-colored to white. The flowering period extends from May to August.

The elliptical to egg-shaped, brown capsule fruits contain a seed and are 5 to 6 mm long and 4 to 5 mm wide. The triangular seeds are 1 to 2.5 mm long and wide.

Distribution and systematics

Dasylirion texanum is distributed in Mexico in the northern part of the state of Coahuila and in the USA in southern and central Texas at altitudes of 600 to 1800 m. It grows on stony slopes and in open grassland, associated with Yucca treculiana , Yucca rupicola , Yucca x keithii, Yucca elata x Yucca constricta hybrids , Nolina lindheimeriana , Nolina texana and various types of Opuntia .

The first description was in 1850 by George Heinrich Adolf Scheele . Dasylirion texanum var. Aberrans Trel is a synonym .

Dasylirion texanum is a member of the Dasylirion section . The upwardly curved, variable radial spines are typical in contrast to the closely related Dasylirion leiophyllum , which has downwardly directed radial spines and is larger overall. In the overlapping areas there are intermediate forms of the two species.

Dasylirion texanum is frost hardy to minus 15 ° C.
