Datarock is an electro rock band from Norway .

history

Frederik Saroea, Ketil Mosnes and Kevin O'Brien founded Datarock in 2000. The musicians got the idea to form a band during a festival in Bergen, Norway . Soon after, Tom Maeland joined and O'Brien left the band. Later Maeland got out again. In 2002 the two remaining multi-instrumentalists Saroea and Mosnes recorded some pieces, burned them on 400 hand-painted 3-inch CDs and sold them in ten different countries.

This was followed by three EPs and in 2005 the debut album Datarock Datarock on the band's record label Young Aspiring Professionals. In the following years Datarock played several concerts worldwide, including in front of over 15,000 spectators at The Good Vibrations Festival in Sydney and in front of over 10,000 at The Meredith Music Festival near Melbourne. In 2007 the band performed at the Hurricane Festival and in 2008 at the Coachella Music Festival in California . The single Computer Camp Love was voted number 12 on the annual list of the Australian youth broadcaster Triple J in 2005. The same title reached number 88 in the list of the best 100 songs by the American Rolling Stone in 2007 .

style

Datarock combine funky guitar melodies with elements of electronic music , disco and punk rock in their sound . In this respect, the British music press associates them with the term New Rave , established by NME , and with other bands of this genre such as B. compared to Klaxons or Shitdisco .

Datarock describe their music as a “mixture of musical styles that (they) like themselves” and in this respect show a pronounced affinity to the entertainment culture and the protagonists from the late seventies and early eighties. In other words, the time which, according to Saroea, was the “high point of cultural evolution”. The duo finds their stylistic inspirations in electro-pop and post-punk .

Her most important artistic role models include Datarock Devo , Talking Heads and Happy Mondays . The new wave band Devo, which Datarock calls their “biological parents”, has a noticeably strong influence both on the music and on the artists' preference for costumed stage spectacles. Dressed in red tracksuits and supported by a constantly changing semi-professional male choir in the same look, Datarock offer a big show "with high recognition value " at their live concerts .
