DATEV building on Fürther Strasse in Nuremberg.

The DATEV is a software house and IT service provider for tax consultants , auditors and lawyers , but also for their clients, such as medium-sized companies, municipalities, associations and institutions. The focus is on the tax consultancy market.

Legal

The company is a registered cooperative . Members can only be members of the tax advisory, auditing and legal advisory professions . The basic corporate purpose is the economic promotion of the members.

history

DATEV was on 14 February 1966 by 65 tax agents in the chamber district Nuremberg established to the accounts of their clients using the computer to do. Her original name was DATEV Date n v Development Organization of the tax agent for the members of the tax consulting profession in the Federal Republic of Germany, registered cooperative with limited liability . The initiators were Heinz Sebiger and Joachim Mattheus. At the end of the 1960s, DATEV introduced the first BWA ( Business Management Evaluation ) in Germany as the so-called DATEV Standard BWA No. 1 .

The background for the foundation was the then new application possibilities of the EDP , the shortage of labor and the imminent introduction of the all-phase net sales tax with input tax deduction for 1968 (colloquial: sales tax). Initially, DATEV's services were completely data center-based; they included entering the data in data acquisition devices on site, sending the punched tape to the data center by post (initially from IBM , then its own data center since 1969) and sending the evaluations back to the office by post . Since 1974 there is a possibility the data via EDI to transmit to the data center. The return of the evaluations (accounting evaluations, pay slips , tax returns or balance sheets ) initially remained by post, because the paper form was usually still required. The gradual conversion of the programs to so-called "in-house processing" in the law firm began in 1985, but the first applications for complete in-house processing without using the data center were only available in 1989.

In 1998 DATEV converted the software from MS-DOS to Microsoft Windows . A port originally planned by IBM in the direction of OS / 2 was no longer pursued due to the lack of success of this operating system .

Since 1998 DATEV has expanded its business areas to include software and IT services as well as consulting and training . The "in-house" processing of data by members increased. In response to the current tendency to return to the use of centrally stored resources (" cloud computing "), an additional data center location was put into operation in spring 2011. Today DATEV supports network-based solutions, on-site software and hybrid models.

Business areas

Solutions for accounting and financial bookkeeping : The financial bookkeeping of around 2.5 million mostly medium-sized German companies is created by tax consultants or in the company itself using DATEV software. Accordingly, DATEV is also a synonym for a German standard for computerized accounting.

Solutions for human resource management, especially wage and salary accounting : In 2018, around 13 million wage and salary slips were created with DATEV software every month. Around 80 percent of this is created in the DATEV computing, printing and logistics center in Nuremberg, and an estimated 20 percent are generated directly on site in companies and law firms using DATEV PC programs.

Tax return solutions

Data distribution and provision of information : Information is largely automatically exchanged between medium-sized companies and their tax consultants as well as around 200 institutions in Germany via the DATEV data center - including financial administrations, social security agencies, health insurances, banks, professional associations and statistical offices. In this way, DATEV supports medium-sized companies with the reporting obligations that are increasingly being carried out electronically as part of various e-government projects. DATEV members have access to more than 530,000 full text documents on the subjects of tax, civil, commercial and company law in databases.

Security services : A central element of the DATEV corporate culture has always been the area of data protection and security. The origin of this focus is the professional duty of confidentiality to which the member professional groups of DATEV are subject. On the basis of the relevant know-how, the cooperative also developed a range of security services, ranging from protection of Internet access, computers and networks, data backup and options for the safe use of mobile work equipment to differentiated consulting services and the physical protection of business premises . So users can, for example, use a managed security service, which over the chancellery or corporate communications devices ( DSL ) an exclusive dial-in via VPN - Tunnel takes place in the DATEV computer center. DATEVnet users are directed to the Internet via a central security zone at DATEV. This contains staggered and redundant protection systems, such as virus scanners or firewall systems, which are permanently monitored and updated by security specialists. DATEV also offers secure e-mail traffic with cascaded, central virus scans and encrypted e-mails. A special unique selling point is the so-called reverse scan, for which copies of all e-mails that have been sent to DATEVnet users are permanently checked over a period of twelve hours in a central memory buffer using the constantly updated protection mechanisms. Viruses , Trojans or keyloggers that should have managed to sneak into the system in the short time before they became known can also be detected quickly. To complete the protective belt, DATEVnet was introduced with the web radar including reverse scan. The web radar is a multi-level security concept with static and dynamic protection filters. As a special security service, all page views of the past 24 hours are checked for web addresses that indicate a malware infection.

Consulting : DATEV Consulting advises law firms and, in cooperation with their tax consultants, also companies on strategic and organizational issues as well as on the use of information technology and on security and data protection.

Software for auditing : DATEV supports auditors specifically with solutions for all aspects of auditing. In addition to products for the final audit with working papers, checklists and templates for audit reports, there are offers for quality control and assurance as well as for digital data analysis.

Solutions for lawyers : DATEV has been involved in the legal market since 1998. The core of the specific offer is the law firm classic pro.

Software for municipalities and municipal companies : The administrations are increasingly relying on business management concepts. Together with the tax advisor, DATEV provides advice specially tailored to municipal issues as well as a software system for everything to do with finance.

Strategic direction

Since the beginning of 2000 there have been internal disputes among the members of the cooperative about the strategic direction in terms of offering DATEV software to people who are not professionals (keyword “direct client business”). With the founding of the "IDA" (DATEV User Association), a cooperative-oriented antipole was formed within the members. The tension between “cooperative obligation” (ie the cooperative should only do what directly benefits the comrades) and “economic success” (any meaningful increase in sales is in principle good) emerged. The dispute seems to have ended since the extraordinary meeting of representatives on February 18, 2005. With the express approval and support of IDA, the statutes were changed with a majority of 86.5% in order to enable the so-called “member-related client business”. However, the prior consent of the consultant is always required, which can also be withdrawn.

DATEV has also been active abroad since 2000. The international engagement currently includes the Czech Republic , Slovakia, Austria , Italy , Poland , Spain and Hungary.

With an amendment to the Articles of Association in 2018, DATEV is also able to establish direct business relationships with other non-members if it serves the main purpose.

Products

DATEV's range of services primarily includes the areas of accounting, human resources management, business consulting, taxes, and organization and planning. It ranges from more than 200 PC programs through cloud services such as online applications, data processing and archiving in the data center to outsourcing services and security services. The offer is rounded off by consulting services and offers for imparting knowledge in Germany and some other European countries.

Platforms

DATEV is Microsoft Windows software. For Apple users, there are emulators that enable the programs to run on Mac computers. The data storage takes place via the Microsoft SQL server . In addition to supporting Microsoft Office formats, most programs were also equipped with interfaces to OpenOffice. In 2017, support for OpenOffice was discontinued due to insufficient demand. The DATEV programs for payroll accounting also have approved interfaces to the ERP systems SAP Business One , SAP Business ByDesign and Microsoft Dynamics NAV .
