Dauphin of Auvergne
The Dauphiné of Auvergne was created when the county of Auvergne was divided in 1155, after Count William VII the boy had been ousted by his uncle, Count William VIII the old , around 1147 . The young count only managed to defend Le Puy-en-Velay and Clermont-Ferrand for himself.
William VII and his successors then called themselves Counts of Auvergne and Clermont , later, after 1281, Counts of Clermont and Dauphins of Auvergne (in the will of Count Robert II it says: Robertus comes Claromontensis et Alvernie Delphinus ). Robert's successors then limited themselves to the title Dauphin von Auvergne .
The name extension Dauphin comes from the mother of Wilhelm VII , a daughter of Count Guigues IV of Albon , who called himself the dolphin ( le Dauphin ). Wilhelm's son was - in memory of his great-grandfather - also called Dauphin ,
