François de Bourbon (* 1542 ; † June 2 or 4, 1592 in Lisieux ) was Dauphin of Auvergne , Duke of Montpensier , sovereign Prince of Dombes and Lord of Châtellerault and Peer of France . He was the son of Louis III. de Bourbon, duc de Montpensier , and Jacqueline de Longwy. He already bore the title of Dauphin of Auvergne during his father's lifetime. He became Duke of Montpensier in 1582.

After taking Saint-Jean-d'Angély in 1569, he was commissioned to fight the Huguenots in the Saintonge , but failed. In 1574 he was appointed governor general of Languedoc and the Dauphiné .

Despite being an avid Catholic, he did not join the Holy League in 1576 and remained loyal to King Henry III. After his death he allied himself with Henry IV and fought at his side in the battle of Arques . He was appointed governor of Normandy when he carried out the siege of Rouen in 1591 for the king. He died a little later.

In 1566 he had married Renée d'Anjou (* 1550; † 1590), Marquise de Mézières , the daughter of Nicolas d'Anjou from the illegitimate line of the House of Valois-Anjou . The couple had a son, Henri de Bourbon , who inherited the title of duke from his father in 1592.
