Samuel David "Dave" Bailey (born February 22, 1926 in Portsmouth , Virginia ) is an American jazz drummer .

Life

Dave Bailey grew up in Philadelphia and went to New York City in 1947 , where he studied at the Music Center Conservatory . He played with Herbie Jones 1951–53, then with Johnny Hodges , Lou Donaldson , Charles Mingus and Horace Silver , among others . Between 1955 and 1960 he preferred to work with Gerry Mulligan and came with him to Europe four times. Bailey also played with Ben Webster in 1958, Curtis Fuller in 1959, with Billy Taylor and was a founding member of the Art Farmer / Benny Golson Jazztet in late 1959 , but dropped out before the first recording session and was replaced by Lex Humphries . Around 1960 he belonged to the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and initiated the short-lived label Jazztime Records with Fred Norsworthy and Duke Pearson , on which his LPs Reaching Out and Bash with Kenny Dorham , Curtis Fuller and Tommy Flanagan were released.

Bailey also made records with Bob Brookmeyer , Kenny Dorham , Lee Konitz , Cal Tjader and Roger Kellaway . In 1957 and 1958 he was at the Newport Jazz Festival , and also appears in the documentary film Jazz on a Summer's Day shot there . He went on tour with Jazz at the Philharmonic and then worked mainly as a teacher and concert organizer.
