Career

amateur

In 1977 Dave Martin lost in the final of the Northern England Amateur Championship with 3: 8 against Sid Hood . A year later he won this and lost in the final of the English amateur championship Jimmy White . In 1980 he was able to defend the northern title, but lost again in the final, this time against the Irishman Joe O'Boye . But Martin won the qualifying tournament for the 1980/81 snooker season in the final against Eugene Hughes , so he became a professional player.

Professional player

Martin celebrated minor successes in his first season. At the Snooker World Championship in 1981 he was defeated in the first round by Bill Werbeniuk , in the UK Championship in 1981 he defeated Eddie Sinclair in the first round and then lost to the upcoming world champion Alex Higgins . Martin was often defeated in the first rounds of important tournaments in his career, but his performance in other ranking tournaments kept Martin on the tour. He was in the final of the International Masters in 1984 , but lost to Steve Davis 3-0. At the Mercantile Credit Classic 1988 he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. In the following years he only reached the round of the last 32 of a ranking tournament (at the UK Championship 1991 ), so that he ended his professional career after his third round loss at the British Open in 1995 against Murdo MacLeod .
