David "Dave" Myers (born October 30, 1926 in Byhalia , Mississippi , † September 3, 2001 in Chicago , Illinois ) was an American blues musician (guitar, bass), who was best known as a member of the band The Aces . He was one of the first blues musicians (according to Allmusic the first) to play an electric bass .

Life

In 1941, the Myers family moved to Chicago from Mississippi . She lived in the same house as Lonnie Johnson , from whom Dave and his brothers got to know the Chicago blues after they had previously learned to play the country blues on the guitar from their father Amos Myers . The brothers performed early on as musicians at local festivals and met blues greats such as Sonny Boy Williamson II , Robert Nighthawk and Memphis Minnie .

With his brother Louis (guitar, harmonica) Dave performed under the name "The Little Boys", at times with the singer Arthur "Big Boy" Spiers. Dave Myers played the rhythm on his electric guitar while Louis played the lead guitar . Together with Junior Wells (harmonica) and Fred Below (drums), “The Aces” emerged. When Wells switched to Muddy Waters' band in 1952 , the remaining Aces became the backing band for Little Walter , who in turn had left Muddy Waters. This constellation played a number of hits as "Little Walter & His Jukes" until the mid-1950s.

Dave left the band in the mid-1950s. He has worked as a session musician with many well-known blues musicians, including Otis Rush , Robert Lockwood Jr. , Buddy Guy , Otis Spann , Earl Hooker and many more. The Myers brothers toured Europe again in the 1970s as "The Aces". Dave later founded "The New Aces". Dave Myers can be heard on numerous recordings as an accompanist, but it wasn't until 1998 that he released his first - and only - album under his own name, You Can't Do That . In 2000 his leg was amputated due to his diabetes , but he continued to give concerts, the last one in February 2001. Dave Myers died on September 3, 2001 in Chicago.
