Dave Bowman

David Walter "Dave" Bowman (born September 8, 1914 in Buffalo (New York) , † December 28, 1964 in Miami ) was an American jazz pianist of the Swing and Dixieland Revival.

Bowman had Canadian parents and grew up in Hamilton, Ontario . He studied piano at the Hamilton Conservatory and the Musical Institute in Pittsburgh . From 1933 to 1936 he played with Ken Steele in Canada, 1936/37 he was with Jack Hylton (on European tour) and then went to New York. There he played with Sharkey Bonano , 1937 to 1939 with Bobby Hackett (with whom he made his first recordings in 1938), 1939/40 with Bud Freeman (in his Summa Cum Laude Orchestra), in the big band of Jack Teagarden , with Joe Marsala , Muggsy Spanier (1941/42) and Eddie Condon . In the 1950s he was a studio musician for ABC and NBC from 1951 to 1954 , played in the trio of Bud Freeman in 1954/55 and moved to Florida as a freelancer in 1955. In the 1960s, shortly before his death, he played in Phil Napoleon's Dixieland band . He died in a car accident.

He recorded with Bobby Hackett, Bud Freeman, Muggsy Spanier, Joe Marsala, Louis Armstrong , Bob Crosby , Roy Eldridge , Billie Holiday and Sidney Bechet (1938). Tom Lord records 38 recordings in his jazz discography from 1938 to 1960. Only one record is as a leader (Stars fell on Alabama / Blues, 1946 on Signature).
