geography

River course

The river has its source on the northwest slopes of Coronation Peak in the Frankland Range , southwest of Lake Pedder . From there it first flows about 2 km to the west and then turns its course to the south-southeast, along the western edge of the Frankland Range. At 146th longitude, it turns south and flows into Payne Bay , the inner part of Port Davey , and thus into the Southern Ocean .

Part of the lower reaches is called Hells Gates , not to be confused with Hell's Gates , the entrance to Macquarie Harbor . The Davey River and its tributaries run their entire length within Southwest National Park , a completely unpopulated area with no roads.
