David Åhlén

David Marcus Åhlén (born July 29, 1885 in Helgesta, Södermanland County in Sweden , † August 21, 1969 in Täby in Sweden) was a Swedish cantor , organist , choir director , music teacher and conductor .

Life

David Åhlén's parents were the organist and elementary school teacher Lars Åhlén and his wife Sofia Kindmark. David studied at the Conservatory of Music in Stockholm from 1901 to 1907 . He passed his organ exam in 1903, the piano tuning exam in 1904 and the exam in church singing and as a music teacher in 1907. His piano teacher was Lennart Arvid Lundberg . His lecturer in counterpoint and composition was Ernst Henrik Ellberg . From 1907 to 1909 he was the organist in Djursholm . From 1909 to 1912 he taught at the Ateneum Volsschullehrerseminar . From 1910 to 1920 he was a singing teacher at the Engelbrechtsvolksschule and from 1913 to 1917 organist and cantor at the church in the Hjorthagen district of Stockholm. From 1917 to 1956 he was cantor and choirmaster at Engelbrechtskirche in Stockholm. From 1940 to 1953 he taught choral singing and choral conducting at the Royal Music Academy . He also directed the academy's choir, in which Birgit Nilsson sang during her studies. One of his students was Eric Ericson . His grave is in the churchyard of Helgesta, south of Sparreholm. He had been a member of the Royal Music Academy with membership number 618 since May 28, 1937.

Waldemar Åhlén , his brother, was the composer of the Sommarpsalm . In his childhood he was taught piano and organ as well as harmony by David Åhlén.
