David Ayres (born August 12, 1977 in Whitby , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper . On February 22, 2020, he played as a short-term substitute goalkeeper about half of a game for the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Hurricanes won 6-3 against the Toronto Maple Leafs , making him the first Emergency Backup Goaltender in NHL history to record a win.

Career

Ayres was born in Whitby, Canada, where he played ice hockey in the youth field, as did his father and brother as a goalkeeper. However, he then did not play a single game in the professional field. In 2004 he needed a kidney transplant that his mother gave him. Most recently he was on the ice for the Northwood Vipers in the Allan Cup , played eight games there, all of which the Vipers lost, and recorded a catch rate of 77.7%.

On February 22, 2020, met Toronto Maple Leafs in the domestic Scotiabank Arena as part of a game of the National Hockey League (NHL) to the Carolina Hurricanes . Ayres acted as an emergency backup goaltender for this game , as he had done several times in the past and in accordance with the league regulations for the Leafs and for their farm team Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League (AHL). For the organization of the Maple Leafs he actually works as a kind of caretaker in the Coca-Cola Coliseum , the home arena of the Marlies, where, among other things, he operates the ice-processing machine ("Zamboni"). At the same time he was occasionally used as a goalkeeper in training sessions for the Maple Leafs and Marlies.

In the game itself, only James Reimer and, just a few minutes later, the second goalkeeper of the Carolina Hurricanes, Petr Mrázek , were injured. Thus, after a little more than half of the game, Ayres was used as the designated Emergency Backup Goaltender , which is basically available to both teams. He became the second goalkeeper of this kind after Scott Foster almost two years earlier ( Jorge Alves was used for a few seconds in 2016 "without need"). Furthermore, Ayres played in the jersey of the Hurricanes, but with a mask and schooner of "his" Maple Leafs or Marlies. After allowing the first two shots to pass, he parried all subsequent eight, in a total of 28 minutes and 41 seconds of play. With him in goal, the Hurricanes managed to extend a 3-1 lead to a 6-3 win by the end of the game, making the Canadian the first emergency substitute goalkeeper to record a win in the NHL. He set another record by becoming the oldest goalkeeper to win in his NHL debut at the age of 42.

Ayres was then the center of the sporting media landscape for several days, was invited to a home game of the Hurricanes and appeared in The Late Show with Stephen Colbert , among others . Roy Cooper made him an honorary citizen of North Carolina on February 25 , while Mary-Ann Baldwin , Mayor of Raleigh , declared the same day David Ayres Day. The revenue the Hurricanes make from selling items bearing his name will go partly to himself and partly to a kidney disease foundation of his choice.
