David Azulai

David Azulai ( Hebrew דוד אזולאי, born on May 5, 1954 in Meknes , Morocco ; died October 30, 2018 ) was an Israeli politician ( Shas ) and has been a member of the Knesset since 1996 .

Life

Azulai came to Israel at the age of nine. After school and military service, he trained as a teacher. He began his political career in 1978 in the city assembly of Akkon , where he was until 1993. In 1993 he was appointed to the regional council of Nahal Iron / Wadi Ara ( Hebrew נחל עירון/ Arabic وادي عارة), an Arab-dominated area northwest of the Green Line , where he was first deputy chairman and later chairman. When he was elected to the 16th Knesset in 1996, he resigned from this office.

From May 2, 2001 to May 23, 2002, he was Deputy Minister of the Interior of Israel in the government of Ariel Sharon . In this function he was the head of the commission that had to determine the status of the remaining Falashes remaining in Ethiopia after the Moses and Solomon operations . Azulai was Minister for Religious Affairs in Benjamin Netanyahu IV's cabinet since May 2015 . He gave up his mandate as a member of the Knesset on March 14, 2018. Azulais son Yinon was for his father move up after several candidates on the Shas list positioned in front of it had waived its claim. Arje Deri was appointed as his successor as Minister of Religion on October 14, 2018 .

On October 30, 2018, the father of four died of cancer.
