David Battley

David Battley (born November 5, 1935 in Battersea , London , † January 20, 2003 in Surrey ) was a British actor specializing in laconic and melancholy comedic roles.

Life

Battley was the eldest son of a Labor MP and was born in Battersea, London. Since he was born with a hole in his heart, he was taught first at home and then in a special school. Later enrolled at Camberwell Art School, but left before graduation. He made a living working for the Battley Brothers family print shop before entering the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . Battley died on January 20, 2003 after a heart attack.

Career

Battley became known on television and in films for his dry, ironic remarks. He worked as a character actor and in comic supporting roles. Battley's TV work in the UK ranged from the satirical show "BBC 3" and the military police series "Redcap" in the 1960s to various sitcoms from the 1970s to appearances on the television series Lovejoy and Mr. Bean . Battley appeared as the hangman in the 1966 BBC film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland .

He made his best-known appearance in the mid-1970s at the side of Monty Python team member Eric Idle on the BBC series Rutland Weekend Television (RWT) . Idle praised Battley's dry, unemotional style. Battley played Paul McCartney's role in the original RWT sketch of The Rutles , a parody of Beatles , but did not appear in the American TV movie The Rutles , which was based on the sketch.

One of his last roles was as a golf course employee in the episode Tee Off, Mr. Bean in the comedy series Mr. Bean in 1995 .
