David Forde at the international match against Austria in 2013

David Forde (born December 20, 1979 in Galway ) is an Irish football goalkeeper .

Career

David Forde comes from the youth of his home club Galway United and played there from 1999 in the first team. In his second year he was already a goalkeeper. This was followed by a brief interlude at the Welsh club Barry Town , before he was signed by the English second division West Ham United in early 2002 . There he could not establish himself, however, and was instead loaned to Derry City and later to FC Barnet .

In 2004 he returned to Galway, in 2005 he moved to Derry City and became Irish runners-up with the club in 2005, the following year they repeated the placement and also won the Irish Cup competition .

From 2007 the Irish goalkeeper tried again in English football in several attempts at Cardiff City , Luton Town and AFC Bournemouth before finally joining Millwall FC in 2008 . From the beginning he was the undisputed number one among the Lions from southeast London. He reached the promotion play-offs twice in a row with the third division team and in 2010 he was promoted to the Football League Championship , the second highest English division , in the second attempt . A saved penalty made him a promotion hero. In the first year after promotion, the newcomer to the league was the third-best defense with 48 goals conceded and Forde played to zero in 20 games. In three years he had also played all 46 season games and 6 play-off games without failure. In the 2011/12 season, however, he suffered a hip injury on matchday 17 and was out for some time. In the second half of the season he had to fight for his regular place and was on the bench in the season finale.

National team

After an outstanding season for a newcomer at Millwall with up to then 17 games without conceding goals, David Forde was nominated for two international games for the first time by national coach Giovanni Trapattoni in March 2011 at the age of 31 . In the next nomination, he made his debut in the national jersey when number one Shay Given had to leave the field in a friendly against Northern Ireland in the 72nd minute on May 24 and he came in as a substitute. In the friendly game but one against Italy he was allowed to stand in goal for the full playing time. Both times he was clean. At the end of May 2012 he was called up as the third goalkeeper in Ireland's EM squad , but was not used. Forde was also in the goal of the European Championship qualifier between Germany and Ireland (1-1) on October 14, 2014 in Gelsenkirchen . On May 12, 2016 he was appointed by national coach Martin O'Neill, although he has not played a league game since the beginning of January 2016, as one of four goalkeepers and the only third division player in the provisional 35-player squad for the Euro 2016 . He was then substituted on again in the last friendly against Belarus before the final squad nomination after an international break of more than 18 months, but ultimately not considered for the European Championship finals.
