David Heilbroner (born August 20, 1957 ) is an American writer , film producer , film director , film editor and screenwriter in the field of documentary films .

Career

Heilbroner received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1979 and his Juris Doctor degree from Northeastern Law School in 1984 .

In 1995 the film Deadly Favors was released, based on his book Death Benefit . Since 2000 he has been making documentaries with his wife Kate Davis. Their first project together was American Babylon , with Heilbroner as producer and Davis as editor. Other projects with his wife included Pucker Up (2005), Plastic Disasters (2006), Waiting for Armageddon (2009), Stonewall Uprising (2010), The Cheshire Murders (2013), The Newburgh Scam (2014) and the short documentary Traffic Stop , which was released in 2017. The latter film tells the story of Breaion King, who was arrested for low speeding. The plot is based on the story of a 28-year-old who was arrested in Texas and hanged herself in a prison cell days later. For this artistic achievement, Heilbroner and Davis received an Oscar nomination in the category “ Best Documentary Short Film ” at the 2018 Academy Awards . However, the award was presented to Frank Stiefel for his contribution Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405 .

In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Private

David Heilbroner has been married to Kate Davis since May 5, 1987 and they are parents of a son (* 1994) and a daughter (* 1997).
