Kate Davis (born February 23, 1960 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American film producer , director , camerawoman and film editor in the field of documentary films .

Career

Davis first worked on the film staff in 1983 when she directed the episodes Southern Comfort and Jockey on the television series America Undercover . After that, in 1985 she worked as assistant editor for the documentary film Sherman's March . She made her directorial debut in a documentary in 1987 with Girltalk , for which she was also responsible as editor and producer. Since 2000 she has been making documentaries together with her husband David Heilbroner. Their first joint project was American Babylon , with Heilbroner as producer and she as editor. In 2001 she published Southern Comfort and received numerous awards at film festivals, including a nomination at the Primetime Emmy Awards . At the Emmy Awards 2004 she received the award for her film Jockey , which she also produced with her husband.

Other projects with her husband include Pucker Up (2005), Plastic Disasters (2006), Waiting for Armageddon (2009), Stonewall Uprising (2010), The Cheshire Murders (2013), The Newburgh Scam (2014) and the short documentary Traffic Stop , which was released in 2017. The latter film tells the story of Breaion King, who was arrested for low speeding. The plot is based on the story of a 28-year-old who was arrested in Texas and hanged herself in a prison cell days later. For this artistic achievement, Davis and Heilbroner received an Oscar nomination in the category “ Best Documentary Short Film ” at the 2018 Academy Awards . However, the award was presented to Frank Stiefel for his contribution Heaven Is a Traffic Jam on the 405 .

Private

Kate Davis has been married to David Heilbroner since May 5, 1987. They are parents of a son (* 1994) and a daughter (* 1997).
