David Hight

David W. Hight (* 1943 ) is a British civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering ).

Hight studied at Imperial College in London (Bachelor in 1965, Master's degree in 1971), where he received his doctorate in 1983. From 1965 to 1975 he was a civil engineer at Scott, Wilson, Kirkpatrick and Partners (in both structural engineering and geotechnical engineering). From 1975 to 1978 he was a Research Fellow at Imperial College, where he was a lecturer in soil mechanics from 1978 to 1983 and a visiting professor from 1993. In 1983 he was visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and 1999/2000 visiting professor in Singapore. He works as a consulting engineer worldwide and is a co-founder of the Geotechnical Consulting Group (GCG).

His projects included the Gullfaks C oil rig, the Hong Kong International Airport and the Rio-Andirrio Bridge .

In 1998 he gave the Rankine Lecture (Soil characterization: the importance of structure and anisotropy). In 1993 he received the British Geotechnical Society Prize.

He has been a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering since 2001 and of the Institution of Civil Engineers since 1997 . In 2016 he was elected a member of the Royal Society .

From 1994 to 2001 he was chairman of the Soil Sampling Committee of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering .
