David Honeyboy Edwards (born June 28, 1915 in Shaw , Mississippi , † August 29, 2011 in Chicago , Illinois ) was considered the last living representative of the Delta Blues . The American guitarist was a friend of Robert Johnson's .

Life

Edwards grew up in poverty in Mississippi and turned to the blues early on. He met Big Joe Williams , who took him under his wing. He also met Charlie Patton and Robert Johnson, with whom he also played together.

In 1942 he made his first recordings for Alan Lomax . In the early 1950s he made (then unpublished) recordings for Chess Records . From the mid-1950s he lived in Chicago and played blues with almost everyone who was well-known in the blues scene at the time. However, commercial success did not materialize until the beginning of the 1970s, when his recordings from the 1950s appeared on a blues anthology that sold quite well. In 1972 Honeyboy met the blues harp player Michael Frank , who became his manager . Numerous appearances by the Edwards / Frank duo followed until today. In 1976 the Honeyboy Edwards Blues Band was formed , which managed to make a name for itself in Chicago. The album Old Friends was released in 1979, which Edwards had recorded with Sunnyland Slim , Big Walter Horton , Kansas City Red and Floyd Jones .

In 2003 Edwards made the "Delta Blues Tour" through Germany with Liz Mandville and band (Chicago), Lars-Luis Linek (harmonica and vocals from Hamburg) and Bertram Scholz (guitar and vocals from Neustadt in Holstein). In 2004 and 2005 Edwards completed a tour of twelve German cities together with Michael Frank and the blues guitarist Tom Shaka from Austin , Texas .

He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1996 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 . In 2000 he was nominated for the Blues Music Award for best acoustic blues artist . His autobiography "The World Don't Owe Me Nothing" was inducted into the "Blues Hall of Fame (Classics of Blues Literature)" in 1999.

After his last appearance in April 2011, he is following a deterioration in his health on August 29, 2011 in his apartment in Chicago a heart failure succumbed.
