David MacKay

Sir David John Cameron MacKay (born April 22, 1967 in Stoke-on-Trent , † April 14, 2016 in Cambridge ) was a British professor of engineering at the University of Cambridge . In 2012 he became the first Regius Professor of Engineering at the University of Cambridge.

career

MacKay invented the Dasher text input system , which among other things enables the barrier-free control of computers. It is available as free software .

In 2008 MacKay published the book Sustainable Energy - Without the Hot Air , which deals with energy consumption and sustainable energy production without fossil fuels . It was released under the GNU GPL (free software).

In September 2009, MacKay was appointed Senior Scientific Advisor to the UK Department for Energy and Climate Change. In 2012 MacKay became the first Regius Professor of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. Several times he led courses at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Muizenberg, South Africa . He succumbed to cancer on April 14, 2016.

MacKay had the Erdős number 2.
