David Robert Malpass (born March 8, 1956 in Petoskey, Michigan ) is an American economist and President of the World Bank since April 9, 2019 .

Malpass has served as Secretary of State for International Affairs at the US Treasury Department since 2017 . He was previously Deputy Assistant Secretary to the Treasury Secretary under President Ronald Reagan , Assistant Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, and Chief Economist at Bear Stearns for the six years prior to its collapse. Malpass served as economic advisor to Donald Trump during the 2016 US presidential election .

Career

Malpass received a BA in Physics from Colorado College and an MBA from the University of Denver . He studied international economics at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University . He speaks Spanish, Russian and French. From 1977 to 1983 he worked in Portland (Oregon) for Esco Corporation and Arthur Andersen's System Consulting Group .

During the Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush presidencies, Malpass worked on a number of economic, budgetary and foreign policy issues, including the promotion of small businesses across Latin America and the 1986 tax reform. Malpass served as Republican staff director of the Joint Economic Committee of Congress from 1989 to 1990 and as advisor to Congress for the 2002-2003 budget assessment.

Malpass was Bear Stearns' Chief Economist from 1993 to 2008. After Bear Stearns' bankruptcy in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis , the bank was merged into JPMorgan Chase .

In June 2008, Malpass founded Encima Global , a New York City firm that conducts daily analysis of global economic and political trends for institutional investors. In 2010, Malpass ran for the Republican nomination in the special election for the New York state Senate seat . He finished second behind Joe DioGuardi with 38 percent of the vote.

Malpass worked as an economic advisor for Donald Trump's presidential campaign from May 2016. He appeared in various media as a supporter of his economic policy agenda. During the post-election period, Malpass led the work of the transition team for business agencies such as the Treasury Department , the Commerce Department , the Federal Reserve, and independent regulators as Trump prepared to become president.

In March 2017, the White House announced that Malpass would be President Trump's candidate for Secretary of State in the Treasury for International Affairs. Malpass was confirmed to the position by the United States Senate on August 3, 2017 .

In February 2019, President Trump named Malpass as a candidate for the presidency of the World Bank. He will succeed Jim Yong Kim , who announced in January 2019 that he would be stepping down three years before the end of his five-year term. Malpass has repeatedly expressed criticism of the work of the World Bank in the past. Malpass was elected on April 5, 2019 and took up his five-year term on April 9, 2019.

Private

He is married to Adele Malpass and has three children. Adele Malpass was the leader of the Manhattan Republican Party . He is also a member of the Republican Party .
