David Owen Phillips (born July 29, 1963 in Wegberg , Germany ) is a former Welsh football player . He celebrated his greatest success as a player from Coventry City by winning the FA Cup in 1986/87 . Between 1984 and 1996 he played 62 caps for the Welsh national team .
Player career
Plymouth Argyle and Manchester City
David Phillips began his career with the English third division side Plymouth Argyle before moving to Manchester City in 1984 . With his new team, Phillips (42 league games / 12 goals) achieved promotion to the first division in 1984/85 . In the Football League First Division 1985/86 , the climber secured relegation as fifteenth in the table.
Coventry City and Norwich City
In 1986 he signed a contract with first division competitor Coventry City and moved into the final of the FA Cup 1986/87 with his team in the following season . In front of 98,000 spectators at Wembley , Coventry defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 after extra time. On July 31, 1989, Norwich City signed him . After placing in the lower midfield of the table, Norwich secured third place with Phillips (42 league games / 9 hits) in the first season of the newly introduced Premier League 1992/93 . After the season ended, David Philipps surprisingly joined Nottingham Forest , who were relegated to the second division for the first time since 1977.
Nottingham Forest and last stops
In the Football League First Division 1993/94 Forest secured the direct return to the first division as runners-up and surprisingly finished the subsequent Premier League in 1994/95 as third in the table. Because of this placement, the club qualified for the 1995/96 UEFA Cup and moved into the quarter-finals of the competition. After a 1: 2 away defeat in the first leg, Forest lost the second leg at home in City Ground with 1: 5 against the eventual title holder FC Bayern Munich and was eliminated from the competition. After he was relegated to the second division with Nottingham in 1996/97 , he moved to the second division Huddersfield Town on November 14, 1997 . After two more positions at Lincoln City and Stevenage FC , he ended his playing career in 2001.
Welsh national team
On May 2, 1984 David Phillips made his debut for the Welsh national team in a 1-0 home win over England. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1992 , Wales defeated reigning world champions Germany 1-0 on June 5, 1991, but just missed out on participation in the final tournament. By 1996 he played a total of 62 internationals (two goals), but could not qualify for any international tournament with Wales.
