Herbert Block

Herbert Block (born January 1, 1903 in Berlin ; died May 6, 1988 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was a German-American economist.

Life

Herbert Block studied economics in Berlin, Vienna and Freiburg, where he in 1926 doctorate was. He had his first job as editor of the newspaper Magazin der Wirtschaft until 1931. In 1932 he worked as a consultant for the League of Nations and between 1933 and 1934 as an editor for the Vossische Zeitung in Berlin, until it was closed by the National Socialists. In 1934 he emigrated to Republican Spain , where he taught as a lecturer at the University of Madrid until the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War . In 1936 he went to Switzerland and made his way there as a journalist. In 1940 he managed to emigrate to the USA , where he worked as a research assistant at the New School for Social Research until 1944 and carried out studies on economic policy in National Socialist Germany. In 1944 he found a job with the OSS and after the war in the State Department of the United States , where he worked until his retirement in 1973 as a department head and expert specializing in economic policy in the Soviet Union . In addition, he was a lecturer at the School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, DC from 1963 and later at the Brookings Institution .
