David Preiss (born January 21, 1947 in Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech-British mathematician who deals with real analysis and geometric measurement theory.

Preiss studied from 1965 at the Charles University in Prague , where he received his doctorate ( RNDr. ) Under Ladislav Mišík (1921-2001) in 1970 and his candidate title in 1979 ( C Sc. ). He was at Charles University until 1990 and then Professor at University College London ( Astor Professor of Pure Mathematics ). He is currently a professor at the University of Warwick .

Among other things, he dealt with geometric measurement theory (e.g. regularity questions of flows, measures and quantities, mathematical theory of fractals, Lipschitz solutions of partial differential equations), nonlinear geometric functional analysis (questions of differentiability, isomorphism problems of Banach spaces, quantity measures in infinitely dimensional spaces) and classical real analysis (differentiability problems, description of derivatives, generalized integrals, structure of subsets of the real number line).

In 2012 he received the Ostrowski Prize and in 2008 the Pólya Prize of the London Mathematical Society, of which he was temporarily a Council member. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (2004) and since 2003 an honorary member of the Academic Society of the Czech Republic . In 2010 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Hyderabad ( Differentiability of Lipschitz functions, structure of null sets and other problems , with Marianna Csörnyei , Giovanni Alberti) and in 1990 at the ICM in Kyoto ( Differentiability and measures in Banach spaces ).

He has served on the editorial boards of Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, Real Analysis Exchange, Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae, and Mathematika.
