Joram Lindenstrauss (born October 28, 1936 in Tel Aviv ; † April 29, 2012 ) was an Israeli mathematician .

Live and act

Joram Lindenstrauss (whose parents emigrated to Israel from Berlin) studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with Shmuel Agmon , Branko Grünbaum and Aryeh Dvoretzky from 1955 to 1962 . He received his doctorate there in 1962 with the dissertation Extension of Compact Operators under Dvoretzky and Grünbaum. He then did a post-doc at Yale University and in Seattle before returning to Hebrew University in 1965 as a member of the Einstein Institute of Mathematics . Since 1969 he was a professor there (since 1985 Miller Professor ). He was u. a. Visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley , in Stockholm , at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey , and at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES).

Lindenstrauss' main areas of work were functional analysis , Banach space geometry and convexity theory (in finite and infinite dimensions). He found a brief proof of Lyapunov's convexity theorem from measure theory. Many of his students in Israel became professors.

In 1981 he was awarded the Israel Prize . In 1997 he received the Stefan Banach Medal . He was a member of the Israel Academy of Sciences . Assaf Naor is one of his doctoral students . In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice ( The geometric theory of the classical Banach spaces ).

Elon Lindenstrauss , also a mathematician, is the son of Joram Lindenstrauss.
