David R. Holsinger

David Rex Holsinger (born December 26, 1945 in Hardin, Missouri ) is an American composer , conductor and music teacher .

Life

David Holsinger studied at Central Methodist University, the University of Central Missouri and the University of Kansas , where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in 2006. Donald Bohlen and Charles Hoag were among his teachers. From 1984 to 1999 Holsinger was a church musician and composer in residence in Grand Prairie, Texas . He then accepted a position as conductor of the Lee University Wind Orchestra in Cleveland, Tennessee , where he also teaches conducting and composition as a professor of music. He is also a guest conductor and composer at numerous US universities and professional wind orchestras.

Holsinger has composed more than 100 works for wind orchestra. His music is characterized by changing metrics and accentuation and is often designed programmatically .

Awards

Holsinger has twice received the Sousa / ABA / Ostwald Award from the American Bandmasters Association : 1982 for The Armies of the Omnipresent Otserf and 1968 for In the Spring at the Time When Kings Go Off to War . In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota , at the premiere of his Easter Symphony . In 1998 Holsinger was named a member of the American Bandmasters Association . In 2003 he received the Excellence in Scholarship Prize from Lee University for his compositional work .
