David Rimmer

David Rimmer (born January 20, 1942 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a Canadian avant-garde film director , experimental filmmaker and photographer .

life and work

David Rimmer studied mathematics and economics at the University of British Columbia until 1963 . From 1963 to 1965 he traveled around the world and decided not to be a serious employee for the time being.

From 1965 to 1966 he returned to Vancouver and studied English for a year at the University of British Columbia. In 1967 he began a Masters program in English at Simon Fraser University . He attended a "filmmaking" seminar with Stan Fox, a producer with CBC. With the support of his lecturer he is shooting his first film " Knowplace " which was produced by CBC / Radio-Canada . He decided to drop out of university and become a filmmaker. In 1968 he made his first independent film, Square Inch Field , which won awards at the Yale Film Festival and the St. Lawrence Film Festival. He also worked with Michael Snow for some time .

From 1970 to 1972 he lived in New York City . He then returned to Vancouver and in 1973 toured the Netherlands , Germany , Italy and Great Britain .

David Rimmer was a participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in 1972 in the Film Show: New American Cinema department .

Rimmer is an exemplary artisan among Canadian experimental filmmakers - his work is consistently subtle and complex, and often very clever.

From 1974 to 1979 he taught filmmaking at the University of British Columbia and since 1979 at Simon Fraser University.
