David Schultz (born June 1, 1955 in Madison County , Tennessee ) is a retired American wrestler . He has worked with Stampede Wrestling , the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and the American Wrestling Association , among others . He gained notoriety, however, especially during his time in the then WWF through an attack on the reporter John Stossel during an interview.
Wrestling career
Beginnings
Schultz was trained by Herb Welch and began wrestling with the NWA in the mid-1970s , where he first competed in a tag team with Roger Kirby .
While he was playing in Canada, he was able to win the Canadian Heavyweight Championship on August 9, 1977 in a fight against Terry Sawyer . Shortly thereafter, he lost the title again to Sawyer, but a few days later, on August 13, 1977, Schultz was able to win it back and kept the title until it was discontinued towards the end of the year.
In 1979 Schultz won the NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Championship in a match against Ron Slinker . In the same year he won the NWA Southeast Tag Team Championship with his tag team partner Dennis Condrey , which the team held until February 1980.
AGPW
After his time with the NWA, Schultz went under the ring name David Von Schultz at Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling (AGPW) . On June 26, 1980 he became the first AGPW US Heavyweight Champion. He was able to defend the title against a few veterans but lost it in his final weeks at the organization.
Stampede wrestling
During the following years Schultz began to compete for the League Stampede Wrestling founded by Stu Hart . In 1981 he feuded with Leo Burke and Katsuji Adachi for the Stampede Wrestling North American Heavyweight Championship. He also appeared for a short time in a tag team with the Honky Tonk Man , who, however, turned against Schultz in a storyline. The resulting feud was ended in 1983 in a steel cage match in Vancouver , from which David Schultz emerged victorious.
WWF
In 1984 Vince McMahon , the owner of the wrestling organization WWF, became aware of Schultz. Schultz, along with his tag team partner Randy Savage and his brother Lanny Poffo, became one of the first known regional wrestlers to be signed by McMahon. Within a short time he became a "heel" at the top of the organization and feuded against Jimmy Snuka together with Roddy Piper , Bob Orton and Paul Orndorff . His opponents during this period include Rocky Johnson and Bobo Brazil . On June 17, 1984 he also competed against Hulk Hogan for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship , but emerged as a loser.
Attack on John Stossel
During an interview with John Stossel on December 28, 1984, he asked him what he said was a "standard question" in which Stossel claimed that wrestling was "fake" or acted. Thereupon Schultz responded with two slaps in the face against Stossel, whereby he went down on both of them. The media quickly became aware of the incident and it led, among other things, to legal consequences. Although Schultz repeatedly mentioned that WWE officials were the driving force behind this action, Schultz was fired. However, it is believed that Schultz was fired not because of the incident, but rather because he challenged Mr. T to a backstage fight.
After the incident with Stossel, he was active as a wrestler in Japan and Canada for some time , but shortly afterwards retired from professional wrestling.
