Dawit Iesses dse Tschubinaschwili ( Georgian დავით იესეს ძე ჩუბინაშვილი , Russian Давид Иессеевич Чубинашвили Dawid Ijessejewitsch Tschubinaschwili , Russified Чубинов Tschubinow ; born September 26, jul. / 8. October  1814 greg. , † June 5 jul. / 17th June  1891 greg. ) was a Georgian - Russian philologist , lexicographer, and university professor .

Life

Chubinashvili was the son of a respected priest and teacher who wrote books on Georgian grammar . Tschubinaschwili lost his parents in 1821, so that he grew up with his uncle Nikolai Tschubinaschwili (1790-1847) in St. Petersburg . Together with his uncle, he served as a translator for the Asia Department of the Interior Ministry. He attended high school in St. Petersburg and was admitted to study at the University of St. Petersburg in 1835 after preparation at home . After completing his studies in 1839, he worked in the Asia Department of the Foreign Ministry.

In 1844 Chubinashvili became a teacher of Georgian and in 1859 professor of Georgian at the University of St. Petersburg. He was involved in the establishment of the Georgian Language and Literature Department , which he chaired from 1855 to 1871. He created a Georgian- Russian - French dictionary which was printed at the expense of the Academy of Sciences and which earned him his first undivided Demidov Prize in 1840 . The basis of the dictionary was the handwritten Georgian dictionary Sulchan-Saba Orbelianis and the Georgian-Russian dictionary Nikolai Tschubinaschwilis, which were published later. In 1847 he received his second undivided Demidov Prize for the Russian-Georgian dictionary published in 1846.

Chubinashvili was elected to the Imperial Geographical Society and the Imperial Archaeological Society. He participated in the Society for Literacy of Georgians in Tbilisi . He wrote literary critiques in the Russian and Georgian press , wrote books about Georgian language and literature and gave Shota Rustaveli The Knight in the Panther's Skin and other classics of Georgian literature out. He bequeathed his rich collection of Georgian manuscripts to the Society for Literacy of the Georgians.
