Theming The Flying Dutchman

De Vgende Hollander in Efteling ( North Brabant , Netherlands ) is a water roller coaster from the manufacturer KumbaK Coasters , which opened on April 1, 2007.

The runway was originally supposed to open on April 16, 2006, exactly 328 years after the disappearance of the Flying Dutchman , but due to various problems it could not be opened until April 1, 2007.

The 420 m long route reaches a height of 22.5 m. The cars reach a top speed of 70 km / h and the maximum acceleration is 3  g .

station

De Vgende Hollander has a double charging station, as this allows a higher capacity to be achieved. The station is designed as a 17th century Dutch port at night. After the waiting area, visitors are free to choose which of the two stations to take. The two stations are located directly next to each other, the boats run alternately to the left and right station according to the zipper principle . First you stop a little in front of the waiting visitors so that the visitors who have already traveled can leave the boats. Then they drive up to the visitors who are lined up in gates so that they can influence which row of seats they drive in. Once the boats have been released by the staff, they will set off independently when the previous boat has left the first block area.

dare

De Vgende Hollander owns eleven individual carriages, each with four rows of seats. In the first and third rows three people can sit next to each other, in the second and fourth rows four people. The rows of seats are higher towards the rear to ensure a better view despite the relatively high backrests. Each seat has its own hydraulic basin bracket, which is continuously adjustable. In the front of the boat is the figure of a lion holding a lamp in its mouth that flickers during the exciting scenes in the Darkride part.

Transport system

In contrast to Mack Rides ' water roller coasters , for example, the carriages of the ride always maintain contact with the rails. These rails are not visible under water due to the cloudiness of the lake. In the sections where the boat travels through water, it is pulled by a chain attached to the rails underwater. The rails are quite wide with a track width of 1.20 m.

journey

After leaving the station, the boat drives through a first room. Between the hulls of two ships, the boat drives into a second, completely dark space filled with thick fog, which is supposed to represent the open sea. Only the flickering lamp in the front of the boat provides some light. This is where the first encounter with the " Flying Dutchman " takes place in the form of an image that is projected onto a wall of water in front of the boat. Only shortly before the boat reaches this wall of water is the surge of water throttled so that the passengers do not get wet. Only a short time later, the boat seems to be crushed by the oncoming flying Dutchman, it is pulled up a little, drives into the hole in the hull of the ship and slides down a 6-meter-deep descent there at 35 km / h. The boat moves with momentum on the next extremely steep lift hill, which has an incline of 45 °, and surprisingly stops there. During this time, a face lights up above the heads of the passengers and a skull is projected onto it. After the captain's cursing was heard, the lift hill jerked to 11 km / h and the boat was pulled to the top of the tower that was visible from the outside. Shortly before the boat leaves the tower, a smoke screen is passed, onto which the outline of a captain is projected. A gate opens at the top, which opens up a view of the Joris en de Draak roller coaster opposite . This is followed by the roller coaster part visible from the outside. Through a curve, the car flies over a small hill, drives through a tunnel filled with fog, drives through a steep curve, passes a block brake, makes a left turn, whereupon the final splash in the lake takes place. From there it is slowly pulled back into the station in a 180 ° curve and a right-hand curve.

Technical problems before the opening

Due to technical problems, De Vgende Hollander opened a year later than planned. For one thing, hanging in the chain lift at the end of the darkride part didn't work as it should. It was initially planned that the boat would be picked up by the chain in one fluid motion. However, it was not possible to let the chain run in sync with the boat, so there was a violent jolt that the park did not want to expose the guests to. That is why those responsible decided to install a holding brake on the lift hill that would stop the boat. It is therefore an emergency solution so that the boat will stop for the time being.

On the other hand, the cars did not cross the Horseshoe during the first test drives. To solve the problem, steel wheels were mounted on the vehicles, which grinded off the surface of the rails a little in order to reduce friction. The boats were allowed to sail for a few days until the pavement was worn away enough. Then the plastic-coated wheels were reassembled so that the journeys in normal operation were not too jerky.

music

The music for the ride was composed by the Dutch composer René Merkelbach. It was recorded on January 22nd, 2006 by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The soundtrack consists of a total of 16 different pieces.
