Baron 1898 in Efteling ( Kaatsheuvel , North Brabant , Netherlands ) is a opened on July 1, 2015 floorless - roller coaster on the model dive coaster the Swiss manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard .

The roller coaster, which is themed in the mining style , has a length of 501 meters, a height of 30 meters and a 87 degree steep and 37.5 meter high first drop . It is the first dive coaster from Bolliger & Mabillard that does not drive through a curve between the Lifthill and First Drop.

After the first test drive was carried out on May 8, 2015, the first manned test drive took place on June 18 of the same year. Efteling published videos about the planning and construction progress of Baron 1898 on its Youtube channel at irregular intervals .

Backstory

The story tells of the wealthy Baron Gustave Hooghmoed (“hoogmoedig” translates as “arrogant”), who one day finds gold in an old coal mine and then builds a large mine complex called “Baron 1898” to mine the gold. However, the "Witte Wieven" (according to Dutch legend, the spirits of wise women) protect the gold and want to thwart the baron's search for miners to work in the pit.

Following this story, the visitor hires at the attraction as a friend for the baron. When descending into the mine, the Witte Wieven cut the hoist rope of the shaft elevator and you fall into the depths.

On June 30, 2015, Efteling released a 13-minute film that tells the story. The story of Baron 1898 shows some similarities with the stories of the Efteling attractions Villa Volta and De Vgende Hollander . All three revolve around a lonely, arrogant man who is put under a curse, which forms the basis for the respective attraction.

Trip description

waiting room

The queue starts next to the entrance to the mine complex and extends between the operational buildings of the mine and the rails of the roller coaster. At the beginning you can choose between the normal and the single rider queue. If the normal waiting area is completely full, there will be a waiting time of around 150 minutes. Later, the queue is divided again into a separate waiting area for the first row of the car and an area for the entire back rows. According to a sign, the waiting time at this point is around 30 minutes for the front seat and 15 minutes for the two back rows. At the end of the waiting area, the now three lines (front row, back rows and single rider) come together again and an employee distributes tickets with the corresponding row of seats printed on them.

There is a separate entrance for wheelchair users. A path begins near the Game Gallery and ends at the rear of the station building. There is a small elevator here that takes people to the first floor of the building.

Pre-shows

The visitors are sent into the mine building in two groups. Each group consists of 18 people, so there are always 36 visitors entering the station at once. First you get to a small room where visitors wait for the first pre-show to begin. A memorial stone for the laying of the foundation stone can be seen here, as well as a bust of Baron Gustave Hooghmoed and an antique clock with a matching cabinet.

As soon as everything is ready, the doors open and visitors enter the room for the first pre-show. This room is set up as a laundry room with tiled walls and work clothes hanging from the ceiling. In the middle of the room there is a depression in the floor, in which, among other things, there is a changing room bench and a running gramophone . Above the doors to the first waiting room there are two screens on which, among other things, English translations of what has been said are projected during the show. On the show, Gustave Hooghmoed (voiced by actor Paul van Gorcum) talks about his mine, welcomes the visitors and is happy that new miners want to start with him. Suddenly a hatch in the wall opens and three Witte Wieven float in. They warn the prospective miners and advise them not to go any further:

“Kompels ga niet verder maar keer huiswaarts
wij witte wieven waken over het goud
U zijt gewaarschuwd!”

"Miners, don't go any further, come home.
We Witte Wieven watch over the gold
. You have been warned."

The baron gets angry and orders the guests to go on to payroll. The second pre-show will take place there.

The visitors first go up a flight of stairs and pass a small office. There are three counters with a balcony above them on the first floor, in the wage office. The baron now stands on this balcony as an animatronic . He gives the visitors final safety instructions for the upcoming trip. In one of the walls of this room there are three doors (one per row of seats). An employee now accepts the previously distributed tickets of the first team, whereupon the members of the team line up in rows of six in front of the assigned door. The three doors open and the train waiting behind is boarded. The same procedure then applies to the second team and the next train.

Baron 1898 has a so-called "Chicken Exit" for visitors who do not dare to go on the actual roller coaster, but only want to see the pre-shows. To do this, you inform the employee at the end of the queue that you do not want to ride and receive a special ticket. With this ticket you can then leave the attraction past the train.

The actual station is modeled on a factory hall, with pipes on the walls and a large iron gate directly above the rails in front of the roller coaster.

journey

If all passengers are properly secured, the iron gate opens and the train rolls into another room. There is a large steam engine and some boilers on the side. Again the Witte Wieven appear and sing:

“U was gewaarschuwd, ongehoorzamen!
Wij witte wieven waken over het goud en saboteren uw afdaling
Hoogmoed komt voor den val! '”

“You have been warned, disobedient!
We Witte Wieven watch over the gold and sabotage your descent.
Arrogance comes before the fall! "

The train drives out of the station into the open air and is carried on the 45 degree steep lift hill (which is modeled on a winding tower ) to a height of 30 meters within 15 seconds. Once at the top, the train brakes for about 3 seconds directly above the First Drop and visitors look almost 40 meters down. According to the story, the Witte Wieven are now severing the carrying rope of the conveyor cage . Accordingly, at the First Drop, the roller coaster train shoots 37.5 meters deep at an angle of 87 degrees into a short tunnel filled with artificial fog: the gold mine with the Witte Wieven. An Immelmann follows behind the tunnel , after which an action photo is taken. After a zero-g-roll , a 360 ° spiral and a small bunny hop, the train pulls into the final brake and finally gets back into the mine building. The journey takes 130 seconds and is open to visitors who are 1.32 m tall.

capacity

The theoretical capacity of around 1000 people per hour has not yet been achieved due to several factors. One of these factors is the stowing of visitor's luggage, which is not allowed to be taken on the train. First, the luggage should be stored on shelves directly at the station. However, this led to traffic jams because visitors entering and exiting wanted to access these shelves at the same time. That is why Efteling set up a guarded cloakroom in the queue during the summer months. Visitors drop off their bags there before they even enter the mine building. You will receive a token which you can exchange for your luggage after the journey.

Another problem arises with the ticket system used by Baron 1898. Many visitors throw away the ticket with the row of seats printed on it, because they are not aware that it will be needed again later.

There are also delays because many passengers do not know that they can open the belts of the safety brackets themselves at the end of the journey and therefore wait for the station staff.

In response, Efteling shortened the interval between two runs from originally more than two minutes to around 75 seconds. The goal is an interval of one minute.

music

The music of Baron 1898 was composed by René Merkelbach and recorded by the Brussels Philharmonic . The singing of Witte Wieven comes from Anneke van Giersbergen . Brass instruments dominate , as miners used to play together in brass bands.

The DJ Hardwell created a remix of the music for Efteling. The single was given out to the first passengers for free.

Incidents

A few weeks after it opened, the roller coaster stood still twice in quick succession:

  • On July 13th, the lift stopped at the highest point, on the lift hill, just before the first drop. The reason was a blown fuse. After 45 minutes, the passengers were evacuated from the train.
  • Six days later, on July 19, the trains could no longer leave the station due to a switch fault. Until the cause was discovered, Baron was closed for two days in 1898.
