Deacon Jones (athlete)

Deacon Jones (actually Charles Nicholas Jones ; born August 31, 1934 in St. Paul , Minnesota , † September 7, 2007 in Hillside , Illinois ) was an American athlete who was Olympic 7th in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 1960 .

Career

Jones set a US high school record in the mile run in 4: 17.6 minutes in 1954 . In 1955 he won the US university championship in cross-country running as a member of the University of Iowa , followed by the university championship in the two-mile run in 1957. As early as 1956 he took part in the obstacle course at the Olympic Games in Melbourne , where he made it to the final with 8: 47.4 minutes in advance; in the final he finished ninth. In 1957, 1958 and 1961 Jones won the AAU championship in obstacle course. In 1959 he won the silver medal behind Phil Coleman at the Pan American Games in Chicago in 8: 56.6 minutes . At the 1960 Olympic Games , Jones qualified second in his prelim in 8: 49.2 minutes for the final; in the final, like four years before, he was unable to repeat his preliminary performance and took seventh place. Jones set his personal best of 8: 42.4 minutes at the ISTAF in Berlin on August 5, 1961 , when he won the sprint ahead of Gaston Roelants and George Young .

Deacon Jones was 1.78 meters tall and weighed 66 kg.
