Music and lyrics

Weakling's style is described as independent, but is also reminiscent of Norwegian bands such as Darkthrone , Burzum , Mayhem and Immortal and has also been compared to the Swedish death / progressive metal band Opeth .

The texts are not printed in the booklet and have not yet been published. According to Gossard, there are no complete texts; there are no printed texts because he does not know what they are. With live recordings, the lyrics are different than on the album. Often he doesn't even speak words. The concept of a song remains the same.

“Weakling always had a couple sentences here and there, generally one per section. I would have a concept what the section was about. [...] It was open-ended. The concept is war - vague things. [...] The passionate argument is the moving thing. I could be singing about killing Jews, or killing niggers, or killing whitey, or killing corporate America ... it'd be equally valid or invalid. My point has nothing to do with propaganda. "

“Weakling always had a few sentences here and there, generally one per section. I would have a concept of what the section was about. [...] It had an open ending. The concept is war - vague things. [...] The passionate argument is the matter of movement. I could sing about killing jews, or killing niggers , or killing white noses, or killing corporate America ... it would be irrelevant or invalid. My point has nothing to do with propaganda. "

- John Gossard : Maelstrom , No. 25.

The symbolic title Cut Their Grain and Place Fire Therein , according to John Gossard, refers to the war tactics of the scorched earth (engl. 'Cut their grain and place / put fire in it') .

layout

Francisco de Goya: Buen Viaje
Wassili Wassiljewitsch Vereschtschagin: Apotheosis of war

The design of the album is generally dark red to reddish brown. In addition to the band logo and album title, the cover motif shows an excerpt from Francisco de Goya's Buen Viaje from 1799. The work Apotheosis of War (1871) by the Russian war painter Vasily Wassiljewitsch Wereschtschagin was used as an insert or gatefold design . The reverse shows a drawing from 1917, the motif of which is death and an old woman (probably by Ernst Petrich ). All works are adapted to the reddish basic color of the design; the details of the persons involved are written in Gothic script. The cassette version appeared with an alternative, black and white design. The symbolist work Archangel (1894) by the Belgian painter and mystic Jean Delville is used here.

Versions

Dead as Dreams was released posthumously in 2000 on the American independent label tUMULt as CD (4000) and double LP (500). The German independent label N: C: U, operated by Vigridr ( Nihil Nocturne ), released the album in 2003 as a cassette with an alternative design in an edition of 300 copies. In the meantime, the DLP version of the album is considered a rarity by record collectors, with the sales value on the online auction house eBay reaching an average of more than 130 US dollars.

reception

The album received almost exclusively positive reviews in magazines and fanzines:

Dead As Dreams is not an easy album to get into, not only because it's emotionally demanding but also since it takes a bunch of lists just to get a handle on all the songwriting twists and turns, but it's a worthwhile investment for anyone interested in hypnotic, epic metal. "

- William York ( AllMusic ) - 4.5 out of 5 points

" Weakling combine ambivalent mood elements into an apocalyptic conglomerate, sometimes melodic, sometimes disharmonious, but not measured against the yardstick of brutality."

- Björn Thorsten Jaschinski ( Legacy magazine) - 13 out of 15 points

"The shocking depth of emotion, sheer musical ability and keenness of ear for all things destructive displayed on this masterpiece should be the goal for all black metal bands wishing to transcend mediocrity."

- Alvin Wee ( Chronicles of Chaos ) - 10 out of 10

“I don't know if Dead As Dreams is the best album of all time. But when I hear it, it's without a doubt the only album in my universe. "

- Erik Herrmann ( Myrrthronth ) - 10 out of 10 points

"From the unearthly trance-like drumming to the churning black metal passages peppered with agonizing doom crawls and psychadelic [sic!] Noise, listening to Dead as Dreams is indeed a plunge into the abyss. The best black metal album of the year. "

- Roberto Martinelli ( Maelstrom )

  6. However, 100 copies of the edition were destroyed by water damage and around 50 copies were given away to friends of the band and the label, which is why the edition is sometimes only given as 350.
