Debra Meloy Elmegreen (born November 23, 1952 in South Bend , Indiana ) is an American astronomer .

Life

Debra Elmegreen studied at Princeton University from 1971 , where she was the first woman to receive her bachelor's degree in astrophysics in 1975 . In 1977 she earned her master's degree from Harvard University , where she received her doctorate in 1979 with a thesis on star formation . From 1979 to 1981 she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Mount Wilson and Las Campanas Observatory . From 1981 to 1988 she was a visiting scholar at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center . In 1985 she became Assistant Professor , 1990 Associate Professor and 1996 Full Professor at Vassar College inPoughkeepsie , New York .

Elmegreen made important contributions to the understanding of star formation in the early universe, the structure of spiral and interacting galaxies, and the evolution of galaxies. For her investigations, she used data from the radio wave, optical and near infrared ranges , especially those obtained with the Spitzer and Hubble space telescopes .

In 2011 she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . From 2010 to 2012 she was President of the American Astronomical Society . She is currently Vice President of the Executive Committee of the International Astronomical Union . In 2019 she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

She is married to Bruce Elmegreen , with whom she published numerous scientific papers.
