First recordings and later cover versions

After the young pianist and bandleader Harold Arlen , who at that time was still working under his real name Harold Arluck, came with his ensemble, the Buffalodians , from Buffalo to Pittsburgh and finally to New York in 1926, he met Fletcher Henderson and began working for him arrange ( dynamite ) and compose. Out of his great admiration for Henderson, Harold Arlen played the jazz track Deep Henderson , a lively foxtrot number, with his band on May 24, 1926 for Columbia . It was the Buffalodians ' first recording session , which consisted of Henry Krompart, Frank Davis (trumpet), Norman Booth (trombone), Bill Wullen, Ivan Beaty (clarinet, alto and soprano saxophone) Jules Pillar (tenor saxophone), Dick George (piano), Jack McLaughlin (violin), Charles Panico (banjo, guitar), Hal Raub (banjo) and Harold Tapson (drums). Arlen's biographer Edward Jablonski also incorrectly ascribes the composition of the title to Arlen, but the record label of the Buffalodians recording is clearly marked with the author's name "Rose".

From March 1926, before Arlen and the Buffalodians , the Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra (Victor), King Oliver and His Dixie Syncopators (Vocalion), Julie Wintz & George Zimmer's Jersey Collegians ( Pathé ) and the Original Indiana Five (Harmony) Rose played 'Composition a. Other musicians who covered the title in 1926 were Sam Lanin , Charley Straight , Mike Markel ( Okeh ), Joe Candullo ( Banner ) and Charlie Skeete (Edison); in Berlin, versions by Julian Fuhs (Electrola) and Dajos Béla (Odeon) were recorded and published in early 1927 . The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 74 (as of 2016) cover versions in the field of jazz , in later years also by Bert Ambrose , Ralph Sutton , Yank Lawson , Bob Scobey , Rod Mason , Bob Schulz , Allan Vaché , John Gill / Jon-Erik Kellso and numerous Dixieland bands .
