Defenestration

The Prague lintel of 1618

Defenestration ( lat. De "from ... down" and fenestra "window") or window lintel describes the falling of a person out of a window .

Defenestrations occurred in the Middle Ages and in the early modern period , such as the first Prague lintel in 1419 at the beginning of the Hussite Wars or the Bamberg lintel of Marshal Louis-Alexandre Berthier in 1815 . The second lintel in Prague , which triggered the Thirty Years War in 1618 , is particularly well-known . The Cologne lintel of March 3, 1848 was not a defenestration in the true sense of the word.

In the Old Testament , the hated queen of the northern kingdom of Israel , Jezebel , was thrown to her death from a window of her palace at the behest of Jehu .

Defenestrations represent a form of violence that stands between lynching (often preceded by a formal “condemnation” by the perpetrator ), divine judgment and communal murder .

Nowadays, falling windows are also a type of accident at work , especially on construction sites , as well as in leisure time or occur with suicidal intent.
