Defiance is an American thrash metal band from Oakland that was formed in 1985. They are considered one of the lesser-known bands from the Bay Area Thrash Metal scene.

history

The band was formed in 1985 by guitarist Brad Bowers, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Matt Vander Ende. In 1986 guitarist Doug Harrington joined the line-up, but was replaced by Jim Adams a short time later in the summer of that year. After five months Bowers left the band and was replaced by Doug Harrington, who was returning to the band.

In early 1987, singer Mitch Mayes completed the band. Defiance made a few appearances and recorded their first demo. After the recordings, singer Mayes left the band and was replaced by Ken Elkinton. Shortly thereafter, she recorded the second demo called Hypothermia . Through this demo they caught the attention of Roadrunner Records and got a contract with the label in the summer of 1988. The band traveled to Vancouver , Canada and recorded their first album there under the direction of producer Jeff Waters of Annihilator . The debut album Product of Society was released in 1989. Shortly after the release, singer Elkinton was replaced by Steev Esquivel.

In 1990 she recorded her second album called Void Terra Firma at Prairie Sun Recording Studios in Cotati , California. The album was produced by John Cuniberti . In 1992 Defiance released the album Beyond Recognition . It was recorded at Bayview Studios in Richmond , California and produced by Rob Beaton ( Buckethead , Heathen ). In the same year, Adams and Vander Ende left the band. In early 1993 Brian Wenzel (electric guitar) and Mike Bennett (drums) briefly joined the band. Guitarist Jim Adams soon returned and the band focused on performing live and writing new pieces. Tyson Leeper joined the band as the new drummer for a short time, while singer Steev Esquivel decided to leave the band. Dave White (Heathen) joined the band as the new singer, along with drummer Paul Palmer. Together they recorded the demo Wasting Creation , which was produced by Rob Beaton.

In the same year the band broke up. Some members formed the band Inner Threshold , which soon broke up, so that some members again formed a new band called Under . Under broke up again in 1999.

In 2005 Defiance found themselves back together with the four original members and drummer James "Flatline" Raymond and worked on another album. Guitarist Doug Harrington died in November 2006. The band decided to end the project in honor of Harrington and so continued work with Mark Hernandez on drums.

In September 2008 Defiance signed a contract with Candlelight Records . Her new album The Prophecy was released on October 19, 2009. After the release, Mark Hernandez and Steev Esquivel left the band to devote themselves to their bands Forbidden and Skinlab . Shawn Bozarth joined the band as the new guitarist and Keven Albert as the new singer.

On December 19, 2009 in Berkeley , California, she played her first concert in 15 years. A short time later, Burton Ortega was also found a new drummer.

On the official website of the band in early January 2012, the breakup was announced.

style

Defiance played classic Thrash Metal from the 1980s on their first album. The pace of the game was always kept high. Progressive elements found their way into the music on the next album. In their third album, Beyond Recognition , the band turned even more clearly to progressive thrash metal. It contains odd bars, complex song structures and several tempo changes. The melodic singing of singer Steev Esquivel also differs significantly from the first album. On their previous album The Prophecy , Defiance returned to simpler structures. Critics also saw this as too similar to the last albums of the band Testament .
