Town hall Demmin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The town hall of the old Pomeranian Hanseatic city of Demmin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was built at the end of the 18th century and then rebuilt several times. After its destruction at the end of the Second World War , the building on Demminer Marktplatz was rebuilt largely true to the original between 1997 and 1998 .

Around 1236 Demmin was laid out according to plan with a grid-shaped road network, which was also surrounded by a wall ring and five gates. Only a little later, between 1236 and 1249, Demmin received the town charter of Luebi . At that time, the magistrate elected by the citizens commissioned the construction of a town hall at this point in the contemporary Gothic style - as one chronicle says: “ It's the same in the middle of the main market, but a little more to the south and east ... and therefore also in the middle of the city . ”The Gothic town hall is said to have been 107 feet long and 65 feet wide with extensions (Hauptwache, east wing) (a Rhineland foot was 0.3138 m long). By 1596, another extension - the Schottkammer (treasury) - was added to the old town hall.

The late Baroque town hall was the successor to the now dilapidated Gothic building that was demolished around 1769. It was subsequently rebuilt and extended several times, the last time in 1886, in line with historicism according to plans by the government architects Havestadt and Contag from Berlin. The town hall was freed from its outbuildings.

After the city was captured by the Red Army on April 30, 1945, the historic city center of Demmin was essentially destroyed, and the town hall burned down (photo in documentation in the St. Bartholomew Church).

During the GDR era , Demmin's prefabricated buildings were built in the historic center . In 1990, after the fall of the Wall , the city administration and the mayor discussed the need to rebuild the historic town hall. Construction began in 1997 and was completed after a year of construction. Since then, there is a paid underground car park under the town hall and the market .
